5 Heavy-Duty Best Clippers for Double-Coated Dogs [2024 List]

Double-coated dogs’ fur presents a host of problems when brushing, detangling, and de-matting it. Imagine clipping the top layer with a clipper that can’t fight back. You’ll not only strangle the machine but also cause harm to the dog’s skin.

To avoid that particular nuisance, I relied on clippers that were recommended. But I didn’t accept them outright without testing them.

1. WAHL Professional Clipper

By the looks of it, Wahl seems like an ordinary clipper. It’s cordless, so you may think it is less powerful for coat trimming when it’s not made for that at all.

Feet, Face, and Finishing Touches

I tested the product on the coats of Pomeranians, Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terriers, German Shepherds, Great Pyrenees, Goldies, Labradors, and Border Collies.

It worked well for small to medium dogs and also Goldies, Great Pyrenees, and Labs, but the rest of them with at least some curl or complexity didn’t fare well with it.

This alone helped me reach the conclusion that considering it for well-brushed, straight hair seems plausible. Anything a little complex and the clippers get jammed.

Also, they get jammed only where the fur gets thick. I had absolutely no problem detailing the face, and feet, or giving the dogs a final detailed look.

Testing 5-In-1 Blade Adjustment

Adjusting the blade in its signature positions is easier. In fact, it is one of its salient features. I loved the convenience of using the same blade for different lengths rather than buying separate blades.

The #10 length was most suitable for trimming double-coated dogs and in that position, I found out the limitations I mentioned earlier. Going deeper to #40 wasn’t a problem on the face or where the fur was light, detangled, or smooth.

All in all, I felt that the blade worked well in the 5 positions only where the fur didn’t challenge the motor.

I recommend the product for final touches. Also, having it at your side when you only want to remove the extra hair from the face and feet is a major convenience.

2. Andis 22685 Professional UltraEdge (for heavy clean and combed coats)

Speaking of corded and powerful clippers for heavy coats, the Andis surely stand out as a viable option. It owns a speedy motor with two-speed settings, which does miracles in reducing the time taken to trim your dog.

Trimming Time Test

Trimming a Bouvier with the clipper seemed like a major headache because my previous clippers had given up on her deep heavy coat. I used to get a bag full of hair every 3 to 4 months and that was an added headache over the top of finding a compatible trimmer. 

Trying out Andis UltraEdge was a relief. The first few strokes went in with butter-like smoothness and in no time, I was left with a well-trimmed Bouvier that looked like a Schnauzer.

My previous Andis clippers took around an hour to get done with everything, but these reduced the grooming time by 25%.

Heat Test

One problem with using clippers for heavy coats is the blade getting heated up. That was an instant problem with assertive breeds. The Bouvier wasn’t one of that but I still had to respect its boundaries and use several #10 blades that I had. 

This product comes with its signature #10 blade. You’ll have to buy separate blades if you wish to go lighter or deeper than that. I won’t say the blade remained cool throughout because it didn’t. It’s much like any other product out there.

I suggest you use it for small workarounds but for a full-blown grooming session, you’ll have to either wait for the clippers to cool down, or use another one.

3. Neakasa by Neabot P1 Pro (for heavy shedders)

What if you could get a grooming brush, clippers, a dust remover, a pet hair vacuum, and a deshedder all in one product? It also sounded too good to be true for me until I was introduced to Neakasa by Neabot.

Grooming Tools Test

I used all 5 tools on Poms. As the breed’s coat reputation exceeds its behavioral introduction in many cases, you may know that they shed it like crazy. You’ll find their hair floating everywhere.

I’m not even mentioning their twice-a-year blowing session when they start shedding their previous coat for a new one. 

The grooming sessions, as a result, are always messy. I used to dedicate space and wear special clothes because once I started, there was no turning back from hair stuck to everything.

Gladly, the vacuuming feature of Neakasa helped a lot.

• The brush proved to work well in detangling any tuft of loose hair.
• Then I used the deShed tool to remove any excess hair left from the previous session.
• Since it was a full grooming session, I had to use the trimmer. It worked well because the previous two sessions left the hair fluffy and smooth. No major hurdle there.
• Removing dust from the feet sounded redundant but I used it anyway because why not?
• The pet hair vacuum tool worked well enough for cleaning after the session. Of course, I had to use my main vacuum.

Comfort Combs

The product comes with only one blade but 5 combs of different lengths. I used 12 mm on the Poms normally because I didn’t want to go aggressive on the trimming. You can go to either extreme with the 3 mm and 24 mm combs at your will.

But does using different combs affect the performance of the clipper? I don’t think so. In my tests, things went smoothly in all the combs, although I sensed that it sped a little with a 24 mm comb because it had to work along a smaller length.

Noise Test

Noise comes as a nuisance with pet vacuum cleaners. Most of the pets I had ran away the moment I turned on my traditional vacuum cleaner. This one, however, runs with less noise compared to them, but still, noise there is.

It’s not a low hum but a whiz. Astonishingly, the Poms were okay with it. In fact, I felt as if they were looking forward to their “massage” session with the cleaner.

4. Andis 22340 ProClip (great for matted hair)

The power of Andis is enough to trim matted hair in a heavy coat. I used it on a Double Doodle and since then, I haven’t looked back – at least when it comes to trimming curly fur.

Easy to Use

The clipper, like many Andis products, is just a one-button turn-off and turn-on machine that works like a charm for matted hair. The ease of use in itself is definitive. As an owner, I want to focus more on the grooming process itself rather than the tool and its working. 

The ProClip gave me that option as it is easy to hold and operate. Yes, I had to remove the cord to keep it from interfering, but that’s normal with every corded clipper.

Speed

Double Doodles are medium to large-sized dogs weighing from 50 to 80 pounds. Mine was 65 pounds, so I was naturally looking for a speedy powerful clipper.

Much like Andis UltraEdge, this one also comes with a two-speed motor, which I think is a signature motor used by the company for heavy work. I felt that it was a tad bit slower than UltraEdge but not slow enough to mess up the trimming.

In fact, I felt it slowed down where the mats were to slowly but surely remove them.

In doing so, it hurt the dog less than any clipper I’d used.

Attachments

Unfortunately, just like UltraEdge and many Andis clippers, this one also doesn’t come with a lot of accessories. You may have to buy separate #10 blades with combs (I went for an Oster metal set with 10 combs) to add variety to the product’s functionality. 

In between major grooming sessions, I wanted to keep her long enough to look presentable and that’s where I used the 2-inch comb.

So to say, you’ll have to buy extra things to get the extra job done. 

But kudos to the ease of removing the blade.

5. Oster A5 Hair Clippers for Dog (best overall. Has turbo)

The Oster A5 is an allrounder. It’s meant for professional grooming, but you can use it in your home once you get a hang of it. 

Bigger and Better

Using thin clippers for small dogs seems plausible. The same, however, gets lost in the fur of a large dog such as the Great Pyrenees. Add its double coat to the equation and you have a case for larger clippers.

That’s where the Oster A5 helped me when I was using it for a Great Pyrenees mix. 

It was a time when I was living in the South where temperatures soar to an unbearable level for the breed. I had to shave off much of the top coat to allow some cooling.

The dog itself was a feisty one. It’d go into play mode by default at a groomer’s. That cost me extra money because unpredictable dogs are a work. Gladly, I was able to save that money by investing once and for all in the Oster A5. 

Holding it is easy and the gradings on the sides do not let it fall easily. The sheer size also makes it convenient to move around in the coat.

Powerful

Power is another aspect where I’ll give full marks to the clipper. I tested the mettle of the dual-speed universal motor and found out that it was on par with the Andis lineup. In some instances, the performance even surpassed them. That was when I hit matted hair. 

However, I highly suggest that you properly comb your dog before trimming it with this one to avoid any hair pulling. The power of Oster does have the potential to do that. 

Wider Blade

I found out that the blade is truly wider than its counterparts and that further reduces the time taken to trim a dog. I took merely an hour to do away with the dog when its coat was at its prime length.

Why Do I Recommend The Product?

I recommend OSter A5 for its superior power, larger size, and heavy-duty allrounder performance. Using it for medium to large dogs will make your life easier.

Its wider blade size is efficient in reducing grooming time.

Best Clippers for Double-Coated Dogs – Conclusion

One size does not fit all when it comes to dog coats. Single- or double-coated dogs require special treatment. I listed five products with each possessing a special power for special use.
