Training dogs may not be as easy as many people would think. Although dogs are often receptive to training you may need to use additional tools for a better response.

As a trainer with a decade of experience, I have worked extensively with various dog breeds, including the Australian Shepherds. I can attest that they can be quite challenging to handle at times.

However, with the right approach, training them can be achieved, and in this blog, we will be focusing on the use of effective shock collars as a training tool.

The List of Best Training Collars for Australian Shepherd

As a professional trainer who has trained dozens of Australian Shepherds and similar breeds using these shock collars, I’ve come up with a list of all the best Shock Collars you need to buy, to train your Aussie.

1. Bousnic Dog Training Collar for Australian Shepherd

FEATURES:

  • 300-yard range
  • Waterproof collar
  • Beep, vibration, and static shock with multiple grades
  • Remote with screen display
  • Comfortable silicon and metal prongs
  • 2 dog collars are controlled with a single remote

A perfect tool to train your dog.

Collar

So what I like about the design is that I can control 2 collars via a single remote, thus allowing me to train 2 dogs for the price of one, amazing, isn’t it?

This collar instead of having a buckle comes with a clip. That is a quicker way of tying it as compared to a buckle as I’ve seen people struggle with the simple act of tying and untying a buckle. This solves the problem.

Also, the collar has silicon prongs that make it very comfortable for the dog.

Remote

For me, the standout feature of this product is undoubtedly its remote control which has a digital display, ensuring effortless usability. Each training mode is conveniently assigned to a distinct button, thus eliminating confusion.

Additionally, the remote boasts an excellent grip and comes with a wrist strap to prevent accidental drops when using it outdoors.

Dog Size

The collar is designed to fit all dogs from 6-month-old pups to outright adults. No issue there.

Charge

The collar charge lasts for 10 days and the remote has a battery life of 50 days. So in conclusion, the overall battery life is remarkable.

Although it doesn’t have an adapter with it, it can be easily charged with any phone charger that has a removable cable port.

Range

The range of this product is about 300 yards, which is quite the norm at this price range.

One thing to note here is that this collar has not been designed for professionals who require a larger range of training in open fields.

It is what you would call a “backyard training collar” and for that, it works just fine.

Sturdiness.

Unlike the collar, the remote is not waterproof. I know that’s a bummer but in my professional career as a dog trainer I haven’t seen a lot of totally waterproof remotes.

It is important to exercise caution when using the product in wet environments. I recommend you use a plastic case, as it not only increases grip control but also offers protection against water.

Pros:

  • Cheap
  • Waterproof collar
  • The Remote comes with a digital display
  • Comfortable prongs

Cons:

  • Small range
  • The Remote is not waterproof
  • The material used is of average quality

Why do I recommend Bousnic Collar?

I recommend this product for its sturdy build that comes with good comfort.

How is it different from its competitors?

What makes Bousnic Collar unique from its competitors like PatPet and Educator is its price tag which makes it very affordable for domestic dog trainers.

2. SportDOG FieldTrainer 425X Remote Trainer

FEATURES

  • 500-yard range
  • Remote supports up to 3 collars
  • Waterproof
  • Long battery life
  • Fast-charging
  • 3 training modes with a beep, vibration, and shock
  • Static and continuous stimulation with 21 levels

When it comes to dog-collar brands, SportDOG is one of the first names that comes to my mind. Not only does it offer the desired efficiency in its products, but it also provides excellent durability.

Collar

The material used in the collar is quite excellent. It comes with long and short prongs to accommodate different fur lengths.

In my experience with his collar on Aussies, it fitted quite comfortably. The contact points are durable and non-allergenic. There wasn’t anything about it that irritated the dog so I’d praise its comfort level.

The collar also features a battery indicator for convenient charging.

One single remote is capable of controlling up to three collars, but additional collars must be purchased separately.

Overall the collar is adjustable, comfortable, and designed to be safe for any dog.

Remote

The remote has a traditional design and offers three training modes: beep, vibration, and shock. I rarely used the shock mode as the beep and vibration are more than sufficient for training an Aussie

However, if push comes to shove, the 21 adjustable levels ensure that a minimum amount of shock is used to encourage proper behavior.

Dog Size

The collar will sit restfully for a dog of any breed with a weight of 8 lbs and above.

A lot of the owners whose dogs I have trained used to worry if the collar would hinder the movements of the already thick neck and they were amazed that it never affected the dog’s natural movements.

This snug design is one of the key features of this collar.

Sturdiness

As a professional dog trainer, I never compromise on the durability of any of the products that I use or recommend.

Thus, SportDOG E-collars are as sturdy as any dog collars get. Thanks to their outstanding durability and waterproof technology, these devices are capable of withstanding various terrains and weather conditions.

If your device still gets affected and stops working, you can claim the 1-year warranty pretty much easily.

Charge

The product is equipped with non-removable Li-ion batteries. Now that’s pretty much the case with every e-collar but what makes it different is that it requires just 2 hours to get charged fully.

These batteries provide an impressive 50-70 hours of battery life.

Range

The range for the receiver is about 500 yards. I’d say it’s an ideal range for both household and professional training sessions.

So in conclusion, The SportDOG shock collars are practical, durable, and don’t break the bank.

Pros:

  • Waterproof
  • 500 yards range
  • Fast-charging batteries
  • Multiple training modes

Cons:

  • I am yet to see a downside that is worth mentioning.

Why do I recommend SportDOG FieldTrainer?

I will recommend this product for its compact waterproof design that comes with an efficient charging system.

How is it different from its competitors?

Its multiple training levels that come with a big range of 500 yards make it stand out from other collars.

3. Educator E-Collar

FEATURES:

  • 1/2  mile range
  • Pavlovian tune feature
  • Vibration, shock, and tap stimulation
  • Stimulation levels 1 to 100, additional boost stimulation from 1 to 60
  • Stopwatch transmitter with digital display

Educator E-collars may come with a higher price tag, but they are equipped with all the features that justify their value.

Collar

The collar is constructed from Biothane which is an incredibly durable material capable of withstanding both the weather conditions and your dog’s chewing.

I can say that because one of the Australian Shepherds I used this on had a bad habit of chewing away the collar material. It had destroyed many collars before I used this one, it couldn’t eat it off even when it tried to because of the excellent build.

In addition to its resilience, Biothane is soft and non-allergenic, which ensures good comfort for the dog. These are the qualities that set it apart from traditional leather collars.

Remote

The standout feature of this product is its uniquely designed remote. Because most of the remotes follow a conventional design that has a rectangular shape.

This remote on the other hand is shaped like a stopwatch, making it easy to operate with just one hand. This is what I should call a truly ‘’ergonomic design‘’ because it enabled me to access all the buttons effortlessly.

Furthermore, it is equipped with a digital display that indicates the selected modes. Talk about convenience!

In addition to the vibration mode, this product offers a tap sensation that mimics a gentle tap on the dog’s neck.

Now coming to this product’s main highlight, is its Pavlovian tune feature. This is a truly remarkable feature and will do wonders for you. How it works is that Each vibration is preceded by a tune, allowing the dog to associate the tune with the vibration over time.

As a result, the dog eventually responds to the tune alone, eliminating the need for vibration!

Dog Size

This product is suitable for dogs weighing 5 lbs and above, making it compatible with the majority of dogs you may need to train.

Sturdiness

The collar’s biothane material ensures durability, making it a reliable choice even in wet environments. Its waterproof feature adds to its resilience.

The compact design of the remote provides a perfect fit, eliminating any concerns about it slipping from your hands.

Charge

The collar battery typically lasts 1-2 days with regular use, requiring frequent charging. On the other hand, the remote’s battery has a longer lifespan.  Its Li-ion batteries are fast to charge as well.

The collar’s battery does require more frequent charging, which is the only downside I have encountered with this product.

Range

The receiver has a range of 1/2 mile, providing ample coverage for outdoor training sessions

Overall, the Educator E-collar leaves a remarkable impression. It is not only durable but also intelligent and user-friendly. It stands as a strong competitor among the top shock collars including Dogtra and PetSafe.

PROS

  • 1/2 mile range
  • Pavlovian tune with the vibration
  • Waterproof collar made with durable biothane material
  • Ergonomic, stopwatch-designed remote

CONS

  • The collar battery drains fast

Why do I recommend Educator E-Collar?

I recommend this product for its ergonomically built remote that makes it super convenient to use for dog training. After using this collar on a couple of dogs, I can say Educator is one of the best collars for Australian Shepherds.

How is it different from its competitors?

It’s a Pavlovian tune system that eliminates the need for correction when used properly making it a one-of-a-kind collar.

4. Dogtra iQ Plus Dog Training Collar

Features:

  • Compact design
  • One-handed remote control
  • 100 correction levels
  • Remote compatible with 2 collars

Collar

This collar looks tough and its experience proves it. But I haven’t included it in this list because of its compact design only, but also because of its ease of use and good features.

Its correction levels come in two categories, either a nick or a constant. Thus, according to the dog’s stubbornness, I choose either a certain level of short correction or a longer constant correction for the more resistant dogs.

Overall, the strength of the vibrations is also very commendable. Out of the 100 levels of nicks, I didn’t need to go beyond level 40 for my Aussie’s correction.

Just as most of the dog collars that I recommend, this also comes with the feature of dual connectivity i.e. two collars can be connected with a single remote.

Moreover, the collar is waterproof while the remote is water-resistant. This is a good feature and comes in very handy when I’m training the dog out in the open.

Remote

This remote has a very simple yet pretty useful design. There are buttons for the corrections and a knob to set the level required. Thus, it is a one-handed system that makes a very user-centric product.

Durable

The overall quality of the product is nothing short of excellent. It is made with durable material that can withstand extensive use.

Despite its strength, the material is gentle on the dog’s body.

Range

Coming to the range, the collar can be operated from a distance of 400 yards. I faced no problem in terms of the range of this collar when I was training my Aussies in open fields. So I can say with surety that neither will you.

One downside of this collar is that it’s a bit expensive. If you’re low on the budget, choose some other collar from this list, otherwise, it’s a good buy.

Pros:

  • Simple in use
  • Water-resistant
  • Good range
  • Effective correction levels

Cons:

  • A bit expensive

Why do I recommend Dogtra iQ Plus over Dogtra 1900S?

I will recommend this product because of its user-centric design.

How is it different from its competitors?

Its one-handed ergonomic design that comes along with a big range of coverage makes it different from its competitors.

5. PATPET Shock Collar for Large Dog

Features:

  • For a 10-90 lbs dog
  • Remote supports 2 collars
  • 3000 ft range
  • Remote with screen display

Just like SportDog and Petsafe, PATPET is also my go-to brand when it comes to choosing a dog collar, this is because of its simple designs that come with a surety of quality.

Collar

The actual collar machine is very compact and has a sleek design that comes with polyester straps. Now as a trainer, I’m not a big fan of such straps when they’re of low quality because they can irritate my dogs, but PATPET has used excellent material for its straps.

Two collars can be used simultaneously with a single remote, this is quite a necessity for us professional dog owners who are often training multiple dogs together.

Another thing that I liked as a professional trainer was how the prongs were covered by a silicon coat that protects the dog’s skin against any damage. As a naive trainer, you may not realize this thing until your dog gets burn marks due to excessive current.

Finally, whenever I use a certain stimulation, I can hear both the beep and vibration, which is a good point as it lets me know that the correction has been delivered.

This collar offers smart bark detection and adjustable correction levels, ensuring effective training without causing harm. So, if you are searching for the best bark collar for Australian Shepherds, this is the right option for you.

Remote

The design is very minimalist, there is a 3-button system aligned in a straight line at the front with a screen at the bottom. The separate buttons for beep, vibration, and shock leave no room for confusion and make it easy to operate.

Also, its remote features a wrist lanyard, which eliminates any chances that I’d lose it if I’m using it on the go.

Unfortunately, the remorse isn’t waterproof, so I had to take extra care to not get it wet. There is also an additional option of buying a waterproof case for the remote separately.

Battery

Once charged the battery lasts around 2 to 3 days, which is amazing.

waterproof collar.

Range

PATPET offers a range of 3000 ft which is perfect for any type of dog training from barking to hunting.

Pros:

  • Waterproof collar
  • 2 collars compatible with one remote
  • Easy-to-use design

Cons:

  • The Remote is not waterproof

Why do I recommend this product?

I recommend this product because it gives you all the qualities of a good brand with an affordable price tag.

How is it different from its competitors?

Its long-lasting battery separates it from its competitors.

How Do You Train An Australian Shepherd With An E-Collar?

Before you train your dog, you must know how the product works. That’s important to keep the dog from harm’s way because incorrect usage leads to incorrect training, which further leads to the degradation of the dog’s physical and mental health.

Furthermore, the products you read about are all humane only when you use them the right way:

  • Keep the stimulation levels according to your dog’s capacity to bear them.
  • Keep it charged to make sure you don’t experience in lapse in training.
  • Use the collar for about 4 hours daily.
  • Keep a regular check on the dog’s neck to see any potential wounds.
  • Always incorporate positive reinforcement techniques with the training collars to make the process more effective.

To further help you with the training, here’s a video.

Final Thoughts on Best E Collar for Australian Shepherd

My favorite collar from this list is the Educator E-Collar due to its effective stopwatch design along with the unique feature of the Pavlovian tune.

You may choose the one that fits your standards and is affordable for you to buy.
