10 Shock/Bark Collars for Chihuahua Training

During summers my neighbors reached out to me for help with their relentless Chihuahuas. We called them “the bark machines” because for whatever reason they barked, they did it with legendary force and consistency. We had enough of it and so did the Millers.

Luckily for them, I had an abundance of experience with these pups and without further ado, I analyzed the situation and decided to take help from technology as I did before.

That’s where I rummaged through the best bark collars for Chihuahuas from my previous experience and testing and came up with the solution. 

You’ll find the list below. But before that, let’s address the question:

Is It Safe to Use A Bark Collar On A Chihuahua?

Shock or bark collars are completely safe when you use them in the recommended ways. Overusing them or using them solely to punish a dog will always produce undesirable results. For example, your dog may become aggressive after you remove the collar. It may stop eating or drinking well. Or, you may experience a slight difference in its overall behavior.

To save the dog from all of that, always follow these practices:

1. Use suitable shock levels.
2. Make sure that the static levels are not too hard on the dog.
3. Choose the right product meant for small dogs.
4. Use the collar for only 4 hours a day.
5. Incorporate other methods such as positive reinforcement to get the job done.
6. Inspect the contact points frequently to see if the prongs have done any damage to the skin.
7. Listen to your dog’s distress signals, if any. Revisit these points if you find them.

The search for the bark collars hit me with a realization that chihuahua is a very popular breed among dog keepers. That realization transformed into the reason for the compilation of this list.

Chihuahuas are big barkers and I cannot overemphasize this. Thanks to the product, you’ll be able to control their barking frenzy even in a public space with the collar’s auto anti-bark mode. It works fine on many occasions, but you’d have to intervene with manual correction sometimes. 

Night Mode (I trained many Dogs during night time with this collar)

Battery Timing

The LEDs do not overburden the battery of the collar. I was impressed with the battery life as it lasted an exceptionally long time. After charging it for 2 hours, it lasted for 5 to 7 days, even after using it to train my dog for 2 to 3 hours on some days. It helped me train my dog in a ¾ mile range with that battery. Imagine the convenience and the possibilities.

My Testing Process With Images

I tested this product based on its out-of-the-box readiness, charging convenience, anti-bark mode, and responsiveness.

Unboxing it, you’ll find all sorts of necessities that make using a novel gadget easier.

Besides the remote, collar, and contact points, you get a dual-head charging cable, a lanyard, and a tester. I had a slightly different model to test as it is apparent from the alphabetic channel labels on the remote. But each model operates more or less the same and comes with the same accessories. 

All you have to do is unbox the collar, connect it, and start using it as shown in the picture below.

Then comes the charging convenience. Just the presence of a dual-headed cable should indicate how easy it is to put on charge. You connect the two devices with the charging adapter and within 2 hours, you’ll have both charged to the brim. I advise you to do that before using the collar. 

Next, the collar detected slow to loud barking. It passed the “blow test” as I call it. When the collar was in the bark mode, I blew lightly into the prongs. I was careful enough to not shock myself as the prongs fired up. It didn’t detect very light blows that may not be enough to put out a candle. Beyond that, the prongs fired up.

Struggling with an unrelenting dog definitely puts pressure on your routine. The Educator E-collar is here to solve that problem for you. It’s effective for dogs like Chihuahuas, the excessive barkers. With proper use, you’ll enjoy months of peace and quiet.

Stimulation Levels

You may wonder why I have placed this product as the second item on the list. This is because I liked the 100 stimulation levels. With so many options available, you’ll find just the right level to stop your dog’s barking in its tracks. 

Remote

Upon unboxing, the second thing that captures attention is the product’s remote. While it looks a little unconventional, the design is very much practical. By that I mean it fits just right in your hand and allows you to wrap your fingers around it firmly.

Plus, with the added lanyard, you won’t lose the remote during your training sessions. 

Talking more about the remote, the layout is simple and intuitive, which means you won’t have to fumble around with confusing buttons. As a dog trainer, I can attest to the importance of using an easy-to-use remote. It lets you focus on the training rather than any unnecessary distractions. 

In terms of buttons, there’s a stimulation button to the left with a stimulation boost button, colored red. The dial sits proudly with the antenna and the tapping sensation button lives alone on the left side.

In two-dog mode, the tapping button doubles down as the mode selection button as well.

Here’s What I recommend it for a Single Dog

Be careful when choosing the product for your Chihuahua. I’d want you to go with a one-dog system for a single Chihuahua because of the handy tapping sensation. 

Since these dogs are brilliantly smart, using the tapping sensation only a few times followed by the zap will condition them to respect the tap eventually.

I’ve had success with these dogs where I’d only have to tap them once and they’ll be back wagging their tails, not barking for once!

The stimulation dial is convenient and there’s a feature lock button that comes in handy to not shock the dog accidentally. 

Collar’s Weight

In terms of the collar, Educator has to do well to tone them down in terms of weight for smaller dogs. I believe sometimes this collar would be a little heavier for the dog to carry.

However, the quick response time between the collar and the remote has made me think if the huge size benefits it.

Overall, the stimulation on this product is many to choose from, which is a major plus. There’s a tapping sensation better than most vibrations and tones. And the design of the remote is one of a kind for convenience.

My Testing Process

I tested the Educator E-Collar Zen model for Chihuahuas based on its responsiveness, range, and collar strength. It impressed me in all three tests but I wasn’t surprised. The brand is known to produce several models and each pays off quite well.

First comes responsiveness. I tested that by keeping the receiver and the transmitter side by side. By pressing the stimulation button, I noticed that the red light in the two turned on almost instantly together. There may be a delay of microseconds but that is insignificant. It doesn’t affect the correction process in any way.

I noticed the same when I pressed the simulation boost. The stimulation level jumped from 8 to 13. There wasn’t any alarming delay that could worry me about the effectiveness of the product. 

How could I forget the strength of the collar for a feisty breed such as the Chihuahua? The collar holds its position well on the dog’s neck and the steel buckle does not break during strong movements. It’s also easy to snap on and start correcting the dog.

Why Do I Recommend Educator?

The Educator E-Collar Zen’s responsiveness is out of this world. You need that level of communication between the receiver and the transmitter to correct a dog’s barking right on the cue. Besides, there are literally 100 levels of stimulation, which means you can select the right one with the right intensity for your dog.

What Sets It Apart from Its Competitors?

The remote’s stopwatch design makes its usage convenient and fun at the same time. Most of its competitors have slab-shaped or elongated remote controls that may or may not facilitate blind usage. Educator retains this design for all of its models. You’ll find it in the Yellow Mini Educator, The Boss, Micro Educator, and Upland. 

Strengths

• Pavlovian tone suffices most of the time
• 100 levels of shock give you freedom
• Each level is a gradual increase from the previous one
• Long-lasting
• Holds charge for long

Weaknesses

• Heavy collar
• No auto anti-bark mode

3. Bousnic Bark Collar for Chihuahua

Looking for more control over your furry friends? The Bousnic collar will give you that. With its features, it takes traditional shock collars a step forward.

Modes

It doesn’t only offer modes such as beep and vibration, but also does that over a modest range of 1000 feet, letting you train your dog from a distance. The remote has support for dual channel mode for training two dogs at a time.

Design

Design-wise, it’s a winner. The receiver is compact and discreet, easily clipping on the dedicated collar without drawing attention from the onlookers. 

Both the receiver and transmitter are chargeable. However, you’ll have to buy a micro USB cable because it’s not included with the collar.

Charging

The receiver can last around 12 days on a single charge. The remote, on the other hand, can easily do a month. 

Waterproof

On the positive side, the receiver holds an IPX7 waterproof rating and can easily survive bath time. The nylon material collar is durable, long-lasting, and also survives water. It is necessary to mention that the previous model of Bousnic was not waterproof. So comparatively, this is the best model ever.

You can also easily adjust the collar to fit small to medium-sized dogs.

My Testing Process

Bousnic’s remote control is bulky. The buttons also don’t have any backlight. So, I needed to test it for ease of use. Surprisingly, these two design factors meant little to the overall effectiveness of the product.

It did feel big in my hands and the front stared at me point black, but pressing the buttons and changing the channel was easy. The LCD was readable in bright light.

I also checked the capacity of the receiver to withstand water for at least 15 seconds. Throughout the duration, its IPX7 rating proved its mettle. The collar was blinking even after staying submerged.

Why Do I Recommend Bousnic?

I recommend Bousnic’s 650 series because of its targeted features for small dogs. The 16 levels of stimulations with easy channel switch along with the right receiver size add winning attributes to the product.

Compared to this, the 320 series and the 680 series are made for medium to large breeds. They also differ in range, not to mention the design also.

What Sets It Apart from Its Competitors?

Bousnic 650 A and B have receivers appropriate for all breeds regardless of their sizes. That’s the kind of versatility you’d need when training more than one dog of different breeds under the same roof.

Strengths

• The receiver is amazingly small in size
• You get a dual-channel remote
• Longer contact point attachments come included in the box for furry dogs
• Batteries on the receiver and the remote can last for a couple of weeks on a single charge
• Both devices can be charged using any micro USB cable

Weaknesses

• There’s no option for auto-correction
• There’s no ring to attach a leash to it

4. NVK Shock Collar (Recommended For All Small Dogs)

Next on the list is a shock collar from NVK. A lot of its features are similar to that of the third entry on my list, the Bousnic shock collar. The same three modes; beep, vibrate, and shock, are present in this NVK collar.

However, there is a significant difference in the intensity levels here. The receiver of the NVK collar is also noticeably larger.

Waterproof Test

The collar boasts the same impressive IPX7 waterproof rating as its contemporaries, thus, making it suitable for use in every condition. After being submerged in water for 30 minutes, the collar remained dry and unaffected as shown in the image below.

Range Test

You get four channels with the remote that works throughout the range of 1600 feet. The reliability of the range and the strength of the signal thereof remains two of the impressive features.

The Design

Design-wise, the remote and the receiver have standard looks – nothing out of the ordinary. The collar has a side-release plastic buckle and a plastic adjustment loop that allows you to resize it easily for a comfortable fit.

Charging Test

With that, I liked the rechargeable remote and receiver that can be charged with any standard micro USB cable. The battery life goes on for several days over two weeks, which means you’ll have plenty of time to work on training your dog without charging the devices constantly.

However, that duration can vary for the remote depending on the number of channels you use simultaneously.

Why Do I Recommend NVK?

The reason why I recommend this product is the charging freedom it offers.

What Makes It Different From Its Competitors?

Unlike Bousnic, this one’s vibration stimulation makes up for low-intensity shocks. I saw dogs associate with it better than the rest of the stimulations. A buzz would alert them and make them stop in their tracks. They’d return to me, wagging their tails. So, it’s safe to say that the vibration wins over.

Strengths

• High-intensity vibration minimizes the need for using the shock feature
• The rechargeability of the remote and receiver offers great convenience
• Both, the remote and the receiver, are IPX7 waterproof
• The collar is easy to put on and take off thanks to the side-release buckle
• Works very well in toning down Chihuahuas’ needless barking

Weaknesses

• The nylon collar can get hot at times

5. Vsezund Dog Training Collar for Chihuahua 

Vsezund is the 4th best bark collar for Chihuahua on my list. It is compact but it packs a punch in the form of variable vibrations along with static stimulation. You won’t find this in every remote, let me be honest, and I have used quite a few. 

The Design

The first thing that sits well with you is how intuitively the remote has been designed. It speaks of convenience in terms of holding it in one hand, blind usage, and more.

The latter is because of the beautifully and intelligently placed buttons on the remote. 

In the center of the remote lies the shock button, which is prominent and flanked by vibration and beep buttons on either side. The mode selection button sits atop of these. 

Just beneath them, you’ll see intensity-adjusting keys. The layout is fairly simple and once you get familiarized with it, you’ll find it easy to use.

Correction Levels Test

That will help you use the remote blindly. When training a chihuahua, doing that can pay off. For example, with its 18 levels of corrections (starting from 1 to 18 as shown in the image), so it quickly helped me correct my dog’s barking behavior. 

Make sure you select the right level as they are hot on this device. In most situations, I’ve found that using vibrations alone has been effective after teaching the dog to understand the consequences of ignoring my previous commands. 

The Remote

With that convenience aside, the remote features a large LCD display, which makes it easy to keep track of the selected channel, shock level, and the battery life of both the transmitter and the receiver. 

Collar Size (Very Comfortable With My Chihuahua)

Speaking of the collar, it’s light and yet sizable enough for a small dog. The buckle isn’t too tight and that’s appropriate for such a dog. There’s a lavish curved line that stays on when the collar’s working.

Talking about its functionality, the signal doesn’t drop much when you stay inside 2600 feet of radius.

Range Test

However, the moment you step outside it, signals begin faltering. Sometimes inside the 2600 feet radius, I experienced slight dropouts on the periphery. That was when there was a huge obstacle in between. However, if you use it for barking purposes, then there is no need for the range to be considered.

So, you may wanna keep this in mind.

Why Do I Recommend Vsezund?

The product stands out in its TV-remote style transmitter with a key lock, a small and bearable collar, and an LCD you may not find elsewhere. All these assisted in making training less of a pain for me.

What Sets It Apart From The Competitors?

The Vsezund is stylish but this style works. Unlike most products, I didn’t find anything redundant here.

Strengths

• Huge LCD showing a lot of information
• 8 levels of vibration work most of the time
• Easy to use remote control
• 3 channels support

Weaknesses

• The buttons are not backlit.

6. Flittor Anti Bark Collar for Chihuahua

Coming in at number six on our list is yet another training shock collar. The design of it is fairly simple, with a black base with a contrasting colored stripe.

The first thing that I noticed while testing is its side-release plastic buckle that makes it a breeze to put on and take off your furry friend. It makes it distinguishable from its previous model.

As with most products on the list, this one, too, offers three training adjustable modes. But the remote’s design truly sets the collar apart.

Remote

And the blue backlit LCD only adds to the appeal of its appearance. On one side, you will find the channel switching and keypad lock buttons, and on the other, the intensity level adjustment buttons. The range on the remote is about 1000 feet.

Receiver

You will find no display of any sort on the receiver though. It is, in fact, the bare minimum in terms of looks. But you do get interchangeable prongs or metallic contact points with silicone covers in their respective sizes.

Waterproof Test

There’s an IP67 waterproof rating which also makes it dust proof by default. What I like most about this one is that everything you require comes inside the box like the different-sized prongs, their covers, the charging cable, and even a tester.

Why Do I Recommend Flittor?

I recommend it to people who don’t like pomp and show. The product is simple yet effective.

What Makes It Stand Out From Its Competitors?

I found out that the remote remembers settings for each channel more effectively. There wasn’t a single instant where it bailed on me or the dogs, which means it poses less chances of a training lapse.

Strengths

• Dual-channel support to train two dogs at the same time
• The IP67 rating makes it waterproof and dustproof
• Quality-wise, the build feels strong and durable
• The long range of the remote makes it convenient for indoor and outdoor use
• With simple functions, it is very easy to use

Weaknesses

• The battery life on the receiver isn’t all that great
• There’s no display on the receiver

7. Laptom Pro Smart Dog Bark Collar

Here’s some good news for those of you who own more than one dog, or in this case, a chihuahua. You can now get a 2 pack bark collar from Laptom. The best part is that it is quite reasonably priced.

It’s a humane way of training your furry companion, rather than relying on shock collars. The pack has dual vibration mode motors with a standard and strong mode, depending on the reaction of your dog to them.

Even the company itself refers to them as “humane training modes”. They have five distinct levels with a beeping feature that can be used together with the vibration.

Interface

Using such collars does not come without problems. The interference from the environment is a major factor. Worry not, however, because this one prevents false triggering with smart bark detection. 

Trigger Response

Furthermore, the trigger response is incredibly fast, meaning that you can train even Chihuahuas or other frantic breeds within just a few weeks, especially if they are still young.

I have used this on my barking corgi and it works like a charm.

Build Quality

The collars are made of nylon and have a striped design with black being the base color. You also get the usual plastic side-release buckle and the adjustment loop.

The device is also made of plastic, nonetheless, it doesn’t feel very premium. There is also an LCD on the device but it is inconveniently located on the top instead of the front.

Charging

Like most smart bark collars, these are also rechargeable. It took me about two and a half hours to fully charge one device and last about 12 days on mediocre use.

There’s also IPX7 waterproofing for worry-free use during rainy days and bath time.

Why Do I Recommend Laptom Pro Smart Collar?

The anti-false triggering technology is awesome. I tested it by stationing my Dachshund outside the home and the Chihuahua inside. I let the dog outside bark and see if it triggered the collar. Surprisingly, it did not fire up. However, it did correct the dog when the Daschund was too close to the receiver.

What Makes It Different From Its Competitors?

The fact that it offers more sophisticated tech at an affordable price makes it different from the rest.

Strengths

• It has humane training modes with no shock
• It comes as a 2 pack
• Doesn’t activate due to environmental noises
• They are lightweight and small in size
• The intensity levels of vibration can be easily adjusted

Weaknesses

• Doesn’t work very well in curbing the behavior of larger dogs
• Can malfunction at times

8. PATPET Small Size Training Collar

When considering an extra small bark collar for your Chihuahua, prioritize a collar that’s both lightweight and designed for small breeds. PATPET is known for manufacturing more adjustable modern-looking training collars. This collar helps you managing your Chihuahua’s barking habits while keeping their comfort a top priority.

Remote

The collar and receiver combo comes in a sleep silvery-gray color, while the remote boasts a matching hue with eye-catching dark gray touches. 

While the remote doesn’t have an antenna or a switch to change channels, the range is always impressive. Design-wise, the remote bags all the score with good looks and convenient usage. It’s easy to navigate.

Support for Multiple Dogs

You can work with two collars at the same time. Therefore, the collar is the best choice for multiple dog owners looking to keep them on track at the same time. Whether you’re going to train them for obedience or keep them in safe bounds, the product will deliver by meeting your requirements and expectations. 

The Battery

You also get a bigger battery on the remote and the receiver. The former can last almost 60 days with a single charge, whereas the latter easily lasts a month. Again, the numbers mentioned are what I could juice during my testing.

For you, they can vary depending on your use.

Modes

You can also find the three usual modes, beep, vibration, and shock, present here as well. Other usuals include the IPX7 waterproof rating, the nylon collar strap, the plastic side-release buckle, and the collar adjustment loop.

Receiver

Another thing worth mentioning here is the size of the receiver. Unlike the previous ones mentioned on this list, the PATPET receiver is significantly small and looks really good on chihuahuas.

Why Do I Recommend PATPET?

The PATPET is a charge-retaining behemoth. It goes on and on. In my tests, the receiver went on for a month and the remote for another one. I had forgotten that the remote even needs a charge.

What Sets It Apart From Its Competitors?

The remote’s convenient design makes it stand out from the rest. Using the three gigantic buttons was a relief. It also helped me a lot in blind usage because I didn’t have to fumble for the key. Feeling it beneath my fingers wasn’t a problem.

Strengths

• The remote has an LCD that displays, battery levels, the mode selected, and the intensity levels set
• It offers a range of up to 3000 feet
• Works very well on pups and small to medium-sized dogs
• The shock prongs or connectors are Teflon coated

9. NBJU Shock Collar for Chihuahua

Remember, we talked about a modern design when discussing the PATPET shock collar? Well, NBJU also has a very modern and unique design.

The Design

For starters, the collar is made using a combination of black and white nylon to portray a net design. It can also be easily adjusted for a snugglier fit.

Remote

Since it is a bark collar, you don’t get a remote. But all the usual training modes are present. The shocker comes preprogrammed with up to 64 training modes which are easy to set up.

It also has an LCD screen that indicates the charge levels and the intensity level settings.

Collar Prongs

The collar has metal prongs large enough to work on the hairiest of dogs. With that, the silicone covers ensure that the dog is receiving all the sensations unhinged.

A sensor stays hidden between the prongs, making it sure that the collar does not get triggered by false alarms.

The whole structure is designed to withstand the elements. It’s waterproof and tough to let your pup frolic in the water or rush through tickets.

Charging

It can be charged using any micro USB cable, however, one is included in the packaging for convenience as well. All and all, it is a great collar with just one downside that I will share with you in its cons section.

Why Do I Recommend NBJU?

I recommend the NBJU for its plethora of training methods. I tested most of them and there are small differences between the modes, but they work like a charm. Switching back and forth between the modes too much may not be a good idea, though. I found out that the remote control heated up a little.

What Sets It Apart From Its Competitors?

While others may claim to provide ease of usage for novice users, this one does it practically. I found selecting different pre-set configurations hassle-free, which will remove the need for learning anything about operating the device on your part.

Strengths

• It comes with 64 preprogrammed training modes
• The shocking device is waterproof
• It won’t go off due to the surrounding noises
• The design is very appealing
• The UI is easy to maneuver

Weaknesses

• The prongs are too big for smaller dogs and must be replaced
• The device hardly lasts two weeks on a single charge

10. FATEAR Dog Collar

FATFEAR will make your Chihuahua training days less stressful. I’m all for its huge LCD, handy remote control, collar that extends well beyond your expectations, and price that does not break the bank.

The Remote

First comes the remote. You won’t find an LCD this big on every product out there.

The remote has a user-friendly interface with an LCD that clearly displays all the important information right before your eyes. It includes the battery level, shock level, mode selection, and channel number.
