Ultimate Chow Chow Brush Guide: My Top 5 Picks

Last Updated/Info Checked on October 10, 2023 by Linda Michaels

Being an epitome of Quirky traits, the origin of Chow Chow dates back at least a thousand years, all the way back to the northern region of China where they were royally acclaimed for having unique features such as a blue-black tongue and lion-like appearance.

The craze revolving around this distinctive breed grew exponentially in China. They were kept in the royal court and were called Songshi Quan which means “puffy lion dog”.

But the term wouldn’t surprise anyone considering they do rock a thick ruff right across the neck region with a fascinating yet dense fur, allowing them to shield against the chilling winds of winter.

However, this also makes them highly prone to matts, fur entanglement, and general frizziness which requires a thorough brushing and conditioning way more often as compared to other Spitz-type dogs.

Taking that into account, I have scoured the internet to curate a list of the best brushes for chow chows that offer profound value for money along with a multitude of features.

It’s a godsend for me since I would waste most of my time gliding my previous brush across the fur and it would barely accumulate any dead hair at all which resulted in an immense level of frizziness, causing hair to shed all over my carpets in my living room.

Easy To Clean

I am a proud owner of two lovely “Puffy Lion dogs” or in simpler words, Chow Chows. Unfortunately, both of them have rough coats and extremely thick undercoats which makes cleaning quite a nightmare to deal with especially whenever they are fresh out of the pool.

In fact, cleaning my combs and brush would usually take more time than grooming my dogs, however, after this brush caught my attention, my excitement was through the roof because the “Push Button Feature” eliminated all my worries right away.

5. SZBZ Cleaning Slicker Brush for Chow Chows

  • 6.74 ounces
  • Retractable Push Button
  • Rubberized Handle

Self-cleaning brushes are a work of wonder, I just wish more brands would implement this feature into their core mechanics to provide convenience to the consumer base.

Premium Build Quality

First of all, let’s talk about the build quality because, in my opinion, that’s the attribute that people often overlook whenever they are purchasing grooming kits for their beloved pets.

As far as the quality of this brush is concerned, the bristles are resilient and made from fine quality stainless steel to prevent rusting whenever it comes in contact with moisture or humidity after a thorough grooming session.

On the other hand, the outer layer is nowhere near a slouch either, in fact, it’s made from a line synthetic plastic compound with a rubber grip applied on its paddle, to enhance the friction needed for all sorts of maneuvering, especially around the belly region where Chow chows tend to have the most dense form of fur.

Ideal for Deshedding

However, not all the glitters are gold here because, in my initial test phase, I found out that my fluffy pet doesn’t really like to be brushed as often as I would with my previous comb since the bristles felt too stiff.

But after days of usage, it quickly developed tolerance which rectified the irritation caused to the skin of my dog.

Keep in mind that to enhance the de-shedding effect, I had to use the brush backward so not only did it help in removing the dead hair particles but also introduced a healthy therapeutic massaging effect which explicitly improved its blood circulation, causing its hair to grow as soon as possible.

Why Do I recommend the SZBZ Cleaning Slicker Brush for Chow Chows?

The receding bristles is by far one of the best features integrated into this brush because of its superb level of convenience as you no longer have to nitpick each hair strand from the brush, a simple swipe would do it for you.

What Makes It Different From Others?

The bristles provide a soothing feel especially if you rub them across the back, helping in the regulation of blood as well as removing the dandruff from the skin which indirectly improves hair growth by rejuvenating the pores of your pet dog.

Bottom Line

If I had a dollar for every time I ran into grooming-related issues when combing a spitz-type dog like Chow Chow, I would pretty much be a millionaire since the “Songshi-Quan”  I own has fur that feels more like steel wool which only the best brushes for chow chows can rectify through detangling.

Luckily for me, after tons of research and spending countless days, I was able to cherry-pick selected few that were well worth the money with no compromise on the convenience aspect, whatsoever.
